The hospitality industry has seen its share of challenges, and sometimes, even once-thriving establishments fall victim to changing markets. Businesses are becoming increasingly uneconomical due to rising wage and operating costs, and for the next generation, taking over their parents' hotel is becoming less and less attractive.
Such was the case with Alpenhof Messmer in the prestigious resort town of Schruns, a 30-room gem boasting a beautiful view and a glorious past as a 4-star retreat. But two years of closure left it silent, a symbol of lost potential.
At keyone, we revitalise hotels which others might turn a blind eye on, be it for its age or size. In the case of Alpenhof Messmer, the traditional 4-star model with its high staff requirements simply wasn’t working anymore. We needed a fresh approach, one that balanced guest experience with financial viability. This is why we came up with keyone rooms, our brand of revitalised hotels throughout Austria, Southern Germany and South Tyrol.
The key to our revitalisation strategy for keyone rooms Montafon lay in embracing technology and streamlining operations. We understood the allure of the 4-star amenities – the plush beds, the sparkling pool, the indulgent spa area. We knew guests wouldn't compromise on these aspects. What they could adapt to, however, was a slightly different service approach.
As keyone's Key Account Manager, Matthias is responsible for the development of keyone hotels and is the contact person for our largest customers.

Enter the digital age. We revamped the reception area, opting for a smooth, self-service check-in process. Guests receive access codes before arrival, allowing them to skip the traditional registration desk. This eliminates the need for a 24/7 front desk staff, significantly reducing operational costs. This doesn't equate to a lack of support though. Guests can always reach our dedicated team via phone or email for any assistance they might require.
A hallmark of any hotel experience is a delightful breakfast. We kept this tradition alive, offering a delicious and wholesome spread in an area that’s still true to the historic style. This also provides guests with the opportunity to interact with our staff, ask questions, and get personalised recommendations for their stay.

While keyone rooms Montafon might not boast a busy lobby, its heart still beats with warmth and charm. We focus on meticulous cleaning, ensuring every room sparkles, and the common areas like the pool and spa remain pristine. The stunning view, a constant throughout the years, continues to be a highlight. The hotel’s historic bar is still a cosy place to have a drink after a long hike or a day on the slopes.
This blend of modern convenience with a focus on core values – cleanliness, comfort, and beautiful amenities – has struck a chord with travellers. Guests appreciate the competitive price point without a compromise on quality.

The revitalisation of Alpenhof Messmer extends beyond the bottom line. Bringing the hotel back to life injects positivity into the local economy. Tourists have an additional option for accommodation, boosting local businesses like restaurants, shops, and attractions. Additionally, our streamlined staffing approach allows us to provide competitive wages and a good work environment for a smaller, dedicated team.
The current iteration of keyone rooms Montafon serves as a stepping stone. The owner, a forward-thinking investor, is already planning renovations that will further elevate the guest experience. But even in its present form, the hotel is a testament to finding solutions, embracing change, and recognising that sometimes, a little less can lead to a lot more.
Our success story at keyone rooms Montafon is a fresh approach in the ever-evolving hospitality industry. It proves that with creativity, adaptability, and a commitment to guest satisfaction, a historic hotel can be reimagined for a thriving future.
